Recently, Chinese polices have cracked down a large slavery ring, securing more than 200 people from brick making factory. It is a sad thing to see this news on every global news site, wouldn’t you wonder, how is China a Communism country, what about it is still Communism except the political bits? It is also horrifying to think, what if there is no 2008 Olympics, would those people be forever captivated?

Another news caught my eyes today: The Life of the Chinese Gold Farmer. Well, it’s not the wild wild west gold farming, it’s the new cyber farming! Apparently, a Gold Farmer now is someone who spends hours everyday, playing Online Game purely to get the virtual money (or assets), then sell them to people who are willing to buy. And in China, this is already a $80,000-a-year business! I see them as no different to the brick factory slaves, they work 12 hours a day, in a tiny room filled with computers, to earn that little $3 per day. And worse, there are no slave drivers other than the money itself, you can say that they are not forced to work and at least get paid, but, do they ever have the chance been rescued? Even with the Olympics coming?

It is not surprising, that this kind of thing happening in a country now that believes in ‘economical growth’ is everything. When the term ‘economical growth’ gets down to the general population, it only means ‘we need to make more money, we need to be rich to show the world that we are no worse than them’. And I guess that how we made our amazing GDP growth – when 2 billion people have the believe in one thing, what wouldn’t success? But we need to slow down a bit and look at what cost that growth brought, what kind of moral void we now have in our society, what kind of evil got into us that we can make innocent people slaves, make ourselves slaves!

Oh wells, I think it is at least comforting to know, Chinese are now seeking the bits they are missing in the great leap of economics. Lots of people seek to restore themselves by spiritual means, and with the improving general education system, most people chose not the way of their ancestors, but turned their eyes to the ‘western religion’ Christianity! So here is the conflicting and confusing part, is the bad side-effect of fast moving society now a motivational drive for the growth of Christianity in China? Hrm…

    down with slave labour!!

watched Amazing Grace on the plane. so touched -shniff-

I guess even ‘democratic’ and ‘advanced’ (so to speak) countries are slave drivers themselves….. just, hiddenly, and on another territory’s soil. it’s just the common human condition of GREED – baaah!
